Blog Post Idea Generator

This is the first part of a series of posts to help you find and create blog post ideas so you won't get stuck and suffer from writer's block.

The goal of this page is to help you create more content (so you can make more money) and spend less time staring blankly at your computer screen.

The first thing you need to do is have a place to store all of your brilliant blog post ideas. My favorite place to save ideas is NetVibes.com. Store your ideas and access them from anywhere. Create a tab to store your ideas and another tab to read your favorite blogs or news sources.

You may prefer to go use a simple spiral notebook or Google Docs. Use your cell phone to save ideas or record ideas with your audio recorder if you have one. Buy a small notepad if you prefer. Keep it in your pocket and write ideas and transfer them to your main idea bank later. Personally, I like the artsy Moleskine notebooks (see below for link).

Once you have your blog post idea recording system in place, it's time to start creating ideas. The best thing to do is set aside time specifically to create ideas. I recommend getting out of the home or office away from potential distractions. Go to a library or coffee shop.

Once you are settled into your creative nest, it's time to start creating ideas. Start writing whatever comes to mind. Fill up your idea bank until satisified. Sort the good ones from the bad ones and start a section to list your top favorite ideas out of all the ones you have generated.

Write about areas of your life that need fixed... goals you would like to accomplish, etc. Write what you want to learn.

Write about your struggles - hard things you have been through, survived... disease or traumatic events - death, tax nightmares, bankruptcy, lost love, etc.

Write about one of your recent travels. Do a review on where you went, how your hotel was, good and bad restaurants, bars, shops, etc.

Visit the bookstore - I've often found that browsing around a bookstore will give me a ton of ideas. Bring something to take notes with and be sure to visit the magazine section.

If you have a laptop and Internet access with you, here are a few starting point web sites to help you find idea starting points... or trigger similar ideas, spinoffs, etc.
